I believe there are many advantages to the extensive internet. One advantage in particular that comes to mind is the fact that I can communicate much faster and efficient than ever before using the internet. With new technology that has been created such as text messages, it is so easy to communicate with people half way around the world in seconds. We are the most socially connected generation of all time. The second advantage of the internet is the fact that we can receive information so quickly. Being able to upload pictures and videos so quickly allows us to stay in touch with news and remain updated at all times. The last advantage that comes to mind with use of the internet is online shopping. Many people use the internet as a way to purchase things they couldn’t get near them. By ordering things from offline people are capable from getting things from across the world within just days.

With so many advantages that come with the internet, there are also some negative aspects as well. The internet is so powerful that there are people who use it for the wrong reasons too. The first disadvantage is cyber bullying. This has become an extensive problem among the younger generations and can really damage victims at a young age. Cyber bullying has really been on the rise with so many social media sites that have been created in the past decade. The next disadvantage of the internet is the fact that many people become less social while using the internet regularly. Many people hide behind text messages rather than communicating face to face with people. I think this is a problem because many people lose out on a common skill of being able to communicate in person. The last disadvantage that comes to mind when using the internet is the fact that people will also try to steal identities from other people. By giving out your email address or any other small bit of information, we risk having this end up in the wrong person’s hands. With such minimal information comes the possibility of major consequences. Thieves are capable of tapping into banks accounts and other crucial accounts with the use of the internet (“Ross, pg.1”).

  1. Nice job explaining your advantages and disadvantages. I also agree that online shopping is a big advantage to people today, and the fact that you can order all types of merchandise from all around the world is amazing. Orange Collar Media states that, 'In 2010, Americans spent 186 billion dollars in online transactions."Another agreement that we share is how the internet can distract people from learning some really basic face-to-face social skills. It is extremely important to be able to communicate with someone clearly in person for many different reasons.

  2. Hi Kody, I really agreed with your post about the internet. When I wrote my blog I completely forgot about cyber bullying, which is a terrible problem! “Cyber bullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology. Electronic technology includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites. Examples of cyber bullying include mean text messages or emails, rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites, and embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles.” Without the internet, cyber bullying would not be around. Throughout the years, cyber bullying has increased and it’s a very sad problem because it adds way more stress to an already stressful environment, high school. I agree it has become increasingly more prevalent in the younger generations. There have been movies that have come out addressing these issues such as CyberBully (2011) and Bully.

I also agree with your advantage to the internet being fast news coverage. I usually find out about things happening in the news on my twitter, where CNN updates me instantly. Mostly I will see things on there before I watch the news or hear it on the radio. I love being able to have these updates on my site where my friends are also updating about different things, or even reacting to news. For example, when USA beat Russia in the Olympic hockey game the other day, I found out because of all of my friends twitter posts about how great of a game it was, what happened, and who won. I saw that #Oshie was trending and read those posts to read about the hero of the game … I also found out when the game was airing again since I missed it!
    See you in class- Catie

  3. Well Kody first off I would like to say, you made some great points in your writing that really made me think. I would most defiantly have to agree with one of your advantages of the internet, and that being communicating. Communication has been made so much easier due to the internet. (Bright Hub PM) I also would have to agree with the disadvantage you had that was the threat of identity theft. Having the internet has made it much easier and more common for someone to steal the identity of another. youre point that you made saying “By giving out your email address or any other small bit of information, we risk having this end up in the wrong person’s hands” shows how easy and simple it is to make a mistake and for someone to capitalize on that by stealing identity’s.
